When replacement makes sense

  • The compressor or outdoor coil has failed on a system 12 to 15 years old or more.
  • The system uses R-22, which is no longer produced, and needs refrigerant.
  • Repairs are piling up summer after summer.
  • The outdoor coil is badly corroded from salt air.
  • The house never gets comfortable or never dries out, even when everything is working.

Size: bigger is not better

It is tempting to go up a size in a hot climate. In Corpus Christi that often backfires. An oversized system cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull moisture out, so the house feels cold and damp, and short cycling wears parts out. A proper load calculation (often called a Manual J) looks at the home's square footage, insulation, windows and which way they face, air leakage and duct location. Ask whether one was done, especially if the house has had new windows, insulation or an addition since the last system went in.

Efficiency rules for Texas

Since January 1, 2023, the Department of Energy sets regional minimums for central air conditioners. Texas is in the Southern region, where split-system air conditioners under 45,000 Btu/h must be at least 14.3 SEER2, and 13.8 SEER2 for larger systems. Heat pumps must meet 14.3 SEER2 nationwide. In the South, compliance for air conditioners is based on the installation date (U.S. Department of Energy, 2023 Central Air Conditioner and Heat Pump Standards FAQ). Higher-efficiency systems cost more up front and save more on electricity, and in a long cooling season the savings add up faster than in most of the country. Variable-speed and two-stage systems also run longer at low speed, which is better at removing humidity.

New refrigerants

Under the EPA's Technology Transitions rule, new residential split systems manufactured since January 1, 2025 use refrigerants with lower global warming potential, most often R-454B or R-32, instead of R-410A (EPA, Technology Transitions HFC Restrictions by Sector). These are classified as mildly flammable (A2L), and the equipment has safety features designed around that. What it means for you: the indoor and outdoor units need to be designed for the same refrigerant, so replacing just the outdoor unit of an older system is often not possible, and the line set between them may need to be replaced or carefully cleaned.

Coastal details

  • Corrosion protection: near salt water, ask about coil coatings, corrosion-resistant cabinets and coils, and stainless or coated hardware.
  • Elevation and tie-downs: in flood-prone areas, raising the outdoor unit on a stand, and securing it against hurricane winds, protects the investment.
  • Surge protection: power surges after storms can damage control boards and compressors.
  • Attic units: many Corpus Christi homes have the air handler in a hot attic. A secondary drain pan with a float switch protects ceilings.

What a good quote includes

  • Brand and model numbers for both indoor and outdoor units, and the AHRI certificate number for the combination.
  • SEER2 rating, and for heat pumps HSPF2.
  • Whether the line set, thermostat, drain pan, float switch, pad or stand and electrical disconnect are new or reused.
  • Whether ducts will be inspected, sealed or modified.
  • Permit, haul-away of the old equipment, and manufacturer warranty terms and registration.

Frequently asked questions

What size AC do I need?

It depends on the house, not just square footage. A load calculation accounts for insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage and ducts. Oversizing causes humidity problems in Corpus Christi.

What is the minimum SEER2 in Texas?

For split-system central air conditioners under 45,000 Btu/h installed since January 1, 2023, 14.3 SEER2. Larger split ACs are 13.8 SEER2, and heat pumps are 14.3 SEER2 nationwide.

Can I replace just the outdoor unit?

Sometimes, but with the move to new refrigerants, indoor and outdoor units generally need to be designed for the same refrigerant. Indoor and outdoor units that were not designed to work together can also lose efficiency and warranty coverage.

What refrigerant do new AC systems use?

New residential split systems manufactured since January 1, 2025 typically use R-454B or R-32 instead of R-410A.

Is a variable-speed system worth it here?

In a long, humid cooling season, systems that run longer at lower speed are better at removing moisture and can save energy. Whether the extra cost pays off depends on the house and how long you will stay.
