The town

Port Aransas is a city in Nueces County with 2,904 residents at the 2020 census, many more in the busy season. It is the only established town on Mustang Island, bounded by the Gulf of Mexico, Corpus Christi Bay, the Lydia Ann Channel and the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. It is reached by the ferry from Harbor Island or by road from Padre Island. Hurricane Harvey's 2017 landfall just to the northeast caused severe wind and surge damage on the island (National Hurricane Center, Tropical Cyclone Report: Hurricane Harvey).

Island HVAC

Salt everywhere

Beachfront units can corrode in a few years. Coastal coatings, corrosion-resistant coils, stainless hardware and frequent freshwater rinsing extend their life. Placing units on the side of the building away from the Gulf, where possible, helps too.

Condos and rentals

Rentals see heavy use, guests who set thermostats very low, and long empty stretches. Keeping humidity below about 60 percent between stays prevents mold (EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home). A thermostat that reports temperature and humidity remotely, and a float switch on the drain pan, catch problems early.

Raised homes

Units on platforms need to be secured against wind, and long line sets to the air handler need protection.

After storms

Do not run units that were flooded, especially by salt water, until they have been checked.

Tell us whether it is a home, condo or rental, where the units are, and what is happening, and we'll call you back.
