The city

Corpus Christi is the county seat and largest city of Nueces County, with about 317,000 residents, which makes it the eighth-most populous city in Texas. It wraps around Corpus Christi Bay, with parts extending into Aransas, Kleberg and San Patricio counties, and includes the northern end of Padre Island.

What the climate does to HVAC systems

National Weather Service normals put the average August high at 95°F and the low near 76°F, with 29 days of 90-degree heat in a typical August (National Weather Service Corpus Christi, Local Climate (1991–2020 normals)). Add Gulf humidity, and air conditioners here run long hours from spring into fall. The result is wear on capacitors, contactors and fan motors; condensate drains that clog with algae; and dirty coils that drive up pressures and electric bills.

How close you live to the water matters too. Homes near Ocean Drive, North Beach, Flour Bluff and the island see more salt corrosion on outdoor units than homes inland toward Calallen and Robstown.

Homes and systems around the city

  • Older neighborhoods near downtown and along Ocean Drive have homes from the 1930s through the 1960s, some with systems added long after construction, ducts squeezed into tight attics, or window units.
  • Post-war and 1970s–1980s subdivisions across the Midtown and Southside areas: slab homes with attic air handlers, flex ducts and systems on their second or third replacement.
  • Newer construction on the far Southside and in the London area: larger homes, sometimes with two systems, and builder-grade equipment reaching replacement age.

Heating and gas

Many homes heat with electric heat strips or a heat pump; others have gas furnaces. Inside the city, natural gas is supplied by Corpus Christi Gas, the city-owned utility. Its gas dispatch line for leaks or odors is (361) 885-6942, after calling 911 from a safe place (Corpus Christi Gas, Gas Emergencies).

Storms

Hurricane Harvey made landfall just up the coast near Rockport as a Category 4 storm in August 2017 (National Hurricane Center, Tropical Cyclone Report: Hurricane Harvey). Securing outdoor units, adding surge protection and having a system checked after flooding are part of owning HVAC equipment here. See the hurricane prep guide.

Tell us your neighborhood or ZIP, what the system is doing and how old it is, and we'll call you back.
